Casey Foundation Civic Site: Atlanta
Our research shows that many of the most vulnerable children and families in Atlanta are concentrated in five of the city's oldest neighborhoods located just south of downtown. Casey believes the negative conditions surrounding these neighborhoods are being positively changed through a set of comprehensive, community-based strategies. Our work targets three result areas: family economic success, education achievement, and neighborhood transformation.
Working with a wide array of residents, community organizations, civic groups, foundations and governmental officials, we are supporting:
School readiness activities for infants and toddlers:
- Student enrichment activities and aligned curricula for elementary, middle, and high schools
- Job readiness and career coaching
- Community building and resident leadership
- Affordable housing and retail opportunities
Our school readiness initiative works with local schools and child care centers to ensure a smooth and successful transition for children moving into kindergarten and, later, as they move from middle to high schools. We continue to support, along with many partners, the very successful Center for Working Families, Inc. We are continuing our ongoing investment in Voices for Georgia 's Children to help influence policy, investments, and services in the area.
In 2006, Casey purchased 31 acres of land strategically located in one of our target neighborhoods. We are working with local stakeholders and community partners to implement a community-driven corridor -- complete with open and commercial space, affordable housing, and recreation facilities -- as part of the larger Atlanta BeltLine project.
We continue to work with Emory University, Georgia State University, and other institutional partners in launching Neighborhood Nexus. Neighbohood Nexus is designed to connect communities to various types of neighborhood-level research and data, a very important strategy for empowering residents and influencing policy.
To help advance these diverse and ambitious goals, Casey works closely with a set of critical partners, including the Atlanta-based Pittsburgh Community Improvement Association, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Imagine It! Children's Museum, Salvation Army College of Officer Training, many schools, and local funders.
