This brief tells how a group of Oakland artists organized themselves into the EastSide Arts Alliance and went on to build the EastSide Cultural Center in a struggling part of Oakland. The Cultural Center has evolved into more than just a focal point for the neighborhood’s cultural events; it's also a place for young people to gather and school programs to meet, and it includes 16 units of affordable housing.
