Casey Foundation Civic Site: New Haven

Casey's work in New Haven is a joint effort between the Foundation's grant making and direct services operations as the home to Casey Family Services. New Haven Civic Site projects focus on building family economic success and a small grants program for organizations delivering services directly to families.

Family Economic Success

Family economic success (FES) is a key theme for our citywide investments in New Haven. Casey has demonstrated positive results for residents here by supporting an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) campaign. More than 3000 returns were filed by residents in 2008, returning over $4.5 million in tax refunds, and an additional $2 million in EITC and other credits to low-income working families. We are also supporting local nonprofits such as STRIVE-New Haven, New Life Corporation and Empower New Haven in their work to create new economic opportunities for families to find work and save for their children's futures.

Small Grants Program

Now in its fifth year, the New Haven Direct Services Grant Program continues the legacy started by Jim Casey to build stronger communities that enrich the lives of children and families. Since its inception, over $1.8 million has been awarded to area nonprofits. The grant program supports a wide-range of organizations that work directly with disadvantaged children, youth and families. Grants are annual and renewable for a second year for up to 50 percent of the first year's award. Awards have helped provide services in a number of areas including health, respite care, workforce development, job readiness, the arts, and youth development. Many of the grant recipients reported that their awards helped them leverage additional funding for their programs from other sources. The Direct Services Grants Program also includes funding for a larger two year collaborative grant. The Collaboration Grant specifically targets work that builds family economic success and provides two or more organizations working in this area with $75,000 per year.

The 2008 New Haven Direct Services Grant Program recipients include:

  • Achievement First
