Safety First
Child welfare workers are increasingly getting out of the office and into families' homes and neighborhoods. Substance abuse and violence are common family problems. Workers need access to existing wisdom on how to keep themselves, children, and families as safe as possible.
What is "Safety First"?
This tool collects information contributed by family preservation workers, neighborhood workers, and police throughout the country. Topics include: keeping workers clear, calm, and supported; assessing the potential for violence during visits; traveling to and from the family's home; preventing violence while the worker is with the family and between visits; and criteria for recommending that the child be placed outside the home. The tool can be used as a reference guide, as required reading for all new staff, or as a focal point for discussion by team members.
How was this tool applied in Family to Family?
The tool was distributed to all sites. It was used both as a reference guide and as a focal point for ongoing discussions, evaluation of policies, and training.
What did we learn from these applications?
Child welfare staff members appreciate the tool. They do not need much support in using it.
What you need to get started:
All that is necessary is the tool, which is available from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
What you need for full implementation:
One copy of the tool should be available to each team of workers. Supervisors need to meet to discuss it in detail before they hold discussions with their individual teams.
