District of Columbia

As a former Casey Rebuilding Communities Initiative site and a neighbor to our headquarters in Baltimore, we maintain strong ties to child welfare and juvenile justice agencies, local leadership, and other local philanthropies to support efforts to improve the well-being of low-income families in our nation’s capitol.

Casey is especially investing in three neighborhoods in Ward 7, east of the Anacostia River. Despite the District’s growing economic prosperity city-wide, too many families living "East of the River" are experiencing widening disparities in income, health, and education compared to the rest of the city and suburbs. In addition, looming gentrification and Anacostia waterfront redevelopment echo some of the challenges -- and opportunities -- faced by families in our East Baltimore work.

The Foundation is continuing to invest in efforts to close the gap between these neighborhoods and the rest of the city, particularly in relation to employment, savings, home ownership, health care coverage, child welfare services, and quality educational choices for families. We also are working with partner organizations to increase the level of local investment in these neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River.
